The project pursued two main objectives: (1) to identify the barriers which impede the use of innovation and new technology to build a truly optimised single European transport system; (2) to propose actions which will help to tackle these barriers and thus accelerate progress towards such an optimised system. The research process was based on desk research but also – and importantly – on various stakeholder involvement techniques, most notably interviews and online surveys. SINTRAS addressed the following five thematic areas: Connected driving and automation of transport, and use of automated optimisation of traffic flows; Transformation of infrastructure to address connectivity, resilience, new fuels and energy efficiency; Smart mobility services, freight and logistics; Standardisation and interoperability; Alternative fuels other than electrification. The SINTRAS team also produced 23 thorough country-specific studies to understand the different national status quos, challenges, actor landscapes and technological as well as political priorities.

Analysis of national transport systems of selected EU Member States, based on desk research, surveys and interviews. Identification of the technological, regulatory and legal barriers, gaps and weaknesses, strengths and opportunities, which impede or support the development and deployment of innovative technological solutions enhancing the integration of the European transport system. Definition and elaboration of roadmaps and action plans with a view to support and enhance the Commission’s transport research and innovation policy.
